Alumni Promotional Video

Carol Choi is a proud alumnus of the UC San Diego Communication department. She is currently a Buying Coordinator of the Walt Disney Company and works for the Disney stores home base. After graduating from UCSD, Carol worked as an administrator in a law office. She has a love for traveling and spent time in Korea to teach English. During that time, ABC reached out to her with a temporary job opening, in which she decided to leave Korea early to take the position. A mutual bond grew and Choi soon was offered the full time position that she holds now.

Choi explains that the most satisfying part of her job is receiving so many opportunities with the Walt Disney Cooperation. She enjoys the networking opportunities that are readily available and is very thankful for the guidance that she has received. On the contrary, she admits that the toughest part of her job is not being able to apply her communication major directly to her position. “A lot of my job is heavy business, fashion, and numbers related. I wish I had more opportunities to apply the theories I learned at UCSD to my everyday work,” Choi said.

Choi believes that it is necessary to be optimistic in order to succeed in a field like hers. “My field is defiantly expanding- people are constantly buying things regardless of the current economic status and at the end of the day there is always something new to offer,” Choi said.  In order to progress into this field, she highly recommends, “taking every opportunity that comes and to treasure every relationship you come across.” For Choi, she was so eager to finish school and start her career. She wishes she focused on the present and what was happening at that exact moment. Choi said, “ Don’t look so much towards the future, because you are bypassing everything that is happening now. Work really hard, and trust me, the end result will come!”

Final Essay

Throughout this quarter, we have been focusing on how new meanings are created by combining words and images. We have explored this through not only the readings and assignments we have had, but also through the event that we are putting on.  For example, form my own personal experiences and reflections about the class; I have learned how meanings are made with this combination. My portfolio is a prime example of this as well as the alumni promotional video. When my workgroup first filmed the promotional video, we instructed the alumni to say a brief “happy birthday/anniversary” phrase that would be put together to excite the Communication Department. After several cuts and different phrases that we directed them to say, Jamie edited the video to make it have an overall flow to it so that it would be presentable and professional. In her video edit, Jamie added words to the images. Rather than just showing the alumni saying what they said, she added their names in lower left hand corner to give credibility and make the clip legitimate. In addition, in this video, she added an intro of texts that introduce the video. The text says “ It’s time to celebrate…we’re turning thirty,” which are words that are then combined with footage of the alumni. This combination of words and images creates new meaning and value because the viewer is now more aware of not only what is to come, but also why people are singing happy birthday to a department. Also, by putting the name of the alumni in the lower left hand corner on the image of Neville and his family, new meaning is created because the combination allows the viewer to understand why kids are there with a dog. Through putting the words with the images, you can see that Neville and his wife are proud alumni of the Communication Department and that their UCSD experience brought them together to create one big happy family.
In my personal portfolio, I have many pictures through the different pages. This combination of words and images creates new meaning for my portfolio and makes it look more appealing. For example, under my phone call alumni interview with Carol, I added her photo on my website. Although this was not a requirement, it has developed new meaning to my portfolio. It makes my bio seem more legitimate because viewers can put a face to the name that is listed on there and recognize who I am talking about. In addition, I have added photos at the bottom of Disney images. These Disney images do the same thing as the photo of Carol. If I only posted images of Disney clothing on my webpage it would have a completely different meaning. However, with the combination and juxtaposition of displaying both right next to each other, a whole new meaning is created. The reader can understand how Disney correlates to my portfolio because I interviewed an alumnus who works for Disney. Combining these images and words creates new meaning and develops further than just being something appealing to look at.
Furthermore, we learned a great deal about the new meaning that is created through the use of montage. For instance, in The Graduate, a montage is continuously used to portray an internal emotion of the characters, particularity the main character. By using montage, words and images are combined and this creates a new meaning to the story that the viewer is following. We can read more into the character and feel what the character is feeling without the person saying it directly. This use of montage can also be seen in Battleship Potemkin for every plot development. Through the use of images and words, the viewer is able to feel the emotion that is not directly being displayed.
New meaning is the key to the 30th Anniversary event that we are putting on. It is evident in almost everything that we do in class, and is crucial for most video production. Through the work that I have done in class with my workgroup, and the materials that we have discussed on the discussion board, I have come to understand the value and importance of combining words and images.
