While watching Potemkin it is clear to see how montage is used throughout the film. It was strange to watch the film without the sound because normally sound really sets the scene and the vibe, however, watching the Russian version without sound was easy to focus in on the importance of montage. Personally I would prefer to watch it with sound. In the beginning of the film where they show the crew of the entire ship is seen, we see through montage the poor treatment they receive. Through a series of images, we see how horribly the men are being treated. The gross images of dirty meat, and terrifying angry faces of the crewmembers expresses the feeling that they want us to feel. Another example in the film where you can see montage is in the mob scene where they are running down the stairs away from the soldiers. As the viewer we can see that many different things are occurring but with the different scenes displayed together, we can understand the overall message and story. Through the juxtaposition of the scenes showing specific things happening to individuals, they are trying to convey the horrible treatment, which conveys the disgust of the sailors in the first scene I mentioned. Through the use of montage, I am able to see how emotion is added to the film with all of the images that are displayed.

Understanding Comics

Battleship Potemkin

I really enjoyed this reading! McCloud was really creative in the way he displayed his novel because not only did he explain the theory but he also used visuals that really helped me to understand what I was reading. I am not very interested in comics but this book kept my attention. He explains what montage is: juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence. By placing images side by side the viewer is able to understand what is going on and create meaning. There are many small things that come together and create a whole. We learn that comic artists use this concept to create feelings and emotions from their readers. Through the use of multiple images we are able to see a story and understand the relationship of two or more people. In addition, Cloud expresses how much work is put into comics. Many people like myself might think that they are simple drawings that do not have much work put into them but when looking at it form a different perspective, I am able to see how much work and effort is put in. I also like how he further expresses closure when he talks about the small detail that is needed to see human emotion by discussing the small two dots used as eyes and the line as the mouth. Overall, I liked how Cloud is able to express his ideas through both his examples and drawings!

Word & Image

This article focused on montage and how juxtaposition is used. The definition of montage is expressed as the process of selecting, editing, and piecing together separate sections of film to form a continuous whole. Basically montage can create something new by combining separate parts. In addition, he describes the importance of the stages of remembering. These stages are important to montage because they create a vivid memory for the viewer. In addition, he further explains how different objects throughout the film might mean something different but when the object is juxtaposed, there is a whole new meaning behind it.

Theories about Events

Here is an articles that I have read in another classes that I have done that seem fitting:

Power, Politics, and Language - Robert Lakoff
This talks all about the importance and the power of language. I think this is fitting for our event because language is what is able to make all of this come together. The theory is there and our event corresponds to what Lakoff displays.

Dramatic Metaphor

This reading was interesting to me because there are a handful of examples that are relatable. It discusses individual performance and displays how there are many parts of a play to make it a whole. Similar to our event, this can be relatable. In a play, there are many aspects that make the play happen such as the actors, the director’s opinion, the scenery, etc. Our event has many parts to it such as the speake

The Graduate

I connected with this movie because I am graduating this year and it was all about him graduating. In the montage where the sounds of the silence plays, the music is interesting because even though the title talks about silence he was very active in his community at school. The montage really focuses on how relaxed he seems but yet he has so much stress and pressure to find a job after college. It shows an elapse of time of what his time was over the summer. I really feel like this montage sends a message to me and makes me feel a little sad that I am graduating.

Eventology

Just as Priscilla and Tiffany point out, it is interesting to see how the author refers to events as a science. Personally, I would never see it this way, but it is interesting to see how he describes event-ology as a phenomenon. In this reading he discusses planned events and breaks it down into the meaning that deals with the event. For our event in particular I believe that the purpose of our event is to bring the communication department together as a whole. I feel that Tiffany summed this up well by saying that “we should not only think about who the event is for and what is it for, but also how we are communicating what it is for and who we are trying to attract.” We are attracting a variety of people and there are a variety of reasons behind our event. When planning this all out we need to think about these things.
